This new global view of Earth’s city lights is a composite assembled from data acquired by the Suomi National Polar-orbiting Partnership (NPP) satellite. The data was acquired over nine days in April 2012 and 13 days in October 2012. It took 312 orbits to get a clear shot of every parcel of Earth’s land surface and islands. This new data was then mapped over existing Blue Marble imagery of Earth to provide a realistic view of the planet.
The image was made possible by the satellite’s “day-night band” of the Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite, which detects light in a range of wavelengths from green to near-infrared and uses filtering techniques to observe dim signals such as city lights, gas flares, auroras, wildfires and reflected moonlight.
The day-night band observed Hurricane Sandy, illuminated by moonlight, making landfall over New Jersey on the evening of Oct. 29. Night images showed the widespread power outages that left millions in darkness in the wake of the storm.

The hurricane-ravaged east coast has been receiving north Alabama help, but crews from Huntsville Utilities learned they’ll be doing work in Long Island, New York instead of in New Jersey. Crews from Huntsville, as well as Decatur Utilities and Joe Wheeler out of Trinity headed up there this week, but Derrick Moore, one of the Decatur workers, said they were told by crews in New Jersey that they can’t do any work there since they’re not union employees…The crews were told to stand down. In fact, Moore said the crew from Trinity is already headed back home.
How desperate is hurricane-ravaged New Jersey? Not desperate enough to suspend a union monopoly that keeps the state in the bottom ten states for economic competitiveness (and #48 for business friendliness). Relief crews from Alabama who were specifically called to New Jersey found themselves diverted to Long Island, NY after they arrived because they use non-union labor.
This doesn’t look good, does it Obama? We know you’re watching. Say, is that a mosque in the background?
AS HURRICANE SANDY PICKS UP SPEED, forecasters say it could slam into New Jersey as early as 6 p.m. ET, as millions living along the New Jersey, New York and Connecticut coasts await evening high tide that could bring an 11-foot surge of sea water. U.S. Route 30 heading to Atlantic City, N.J., shown above, is already flooded.
The 10 people lifted the truck off 57-year-old Katie Miller, then pulled her to safely, authorities said.
Miller, who was hit in the parking lot of an International House of Pancakes in North Plainfield, suffered only broken ribs and possibly a punctured lung. She was wearing a helmet at the time of the accident.
Police say that the driver of the truck, 78-year-old Gilbert Federbush, was turning into the parking lot and failed to see her. The restaurant manger of the IHOP, Jose Preciado, told The Courier News of Bridgewater that he, the cook and several diners rushed to Miller’s side after the accident because they saw her struggling to breath.
“She was turning purple,” he said.
Police chief William Parenti said that the heroic bystanders may have saved her life due to their quick thinking.
“A lot of times you don’t want to move (a struck bicyclist or pedestrian), but they made the right call here,” Parenti noted.
The driver isn’t expected to be charged, but the accident remains under investigation at this time.
The heroic deed comes on the heels of another group of do-gooders who freed a 10-year-old boy from under a car in Manhattan after he was hit by a cab.

An exclusive Newsmax/IBOPE Zogby International poll shows New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie so dominates the GOP field for 2012 that he garners more than twice as many votes as his nearest Republican competitor.
The new poll reflects growing momentum for Christie, despite his repeated insistence that he’s not ready to be president and has no intention of running.
Christie’s strong showing is likely to further encourage those Republicans who are actively engaged in mustering support for a campaign to draft him to run. Supporters launched a DraftChristie2012 website last October.
The Newsmax/IBOPE Zogby survey shows Christie to be the choice of 23.6 percent of likely GOP primary voters. That dwarfs the 10.3 percent for second-place finisher Sarah Palin.

On the pro-gun right, some were espousing the theorythat Christie’s commutation was a strategic move to set up a legal challenge to the overly-restrictive nature of New Jersey’s gun laws. Both the anti-gun left and the pro-gun right seem to believe that Aitken’s commutation was a shrewdly calculated move to win favor for the governor in Southern and Western states in the event that he jumps into the 2012 Republican Presidential primaries.
Nothing could be further from the truth.
I believe I understand where this comes from. Years of being a prosecutor, but if this is indeed the case. Scratch him from my personal favorites list for President, or even running for President in 2012. Period, the end, fini.
