New York City blind man saved by guide dog will have to give up dog over insurance coverage

The lab, named Orlando, will be 11 on Jan. 5, and will be retiring soon, Cecil Williams, 61, said. His medical benefits will cover a new guide dog but won’t pay for a non-working dog, so he’ll be looking for a good home for Orlando.

“If he had the money,” Williams said, “I would definitely keep him.”

Williams, who lives in Harlem, was at the 145th Street station in New York City at around 9:30 a.m. Tuesday when he began to feel faint. Despite the best efforts of the dog, a black Labrador named Orlando, Williams tumbled over the platform edge and onto the tracks.

Suspect in Herkimer, New York shooting spree shot dead by police after standoff

Published March 14, 2013

HERKIMER, N.Y. –  Authorities in upstate New York say the suspected gunman in a rampage at a car wash and a barbershop that left four people dead and two wounded has been killed by police Thursday morning in a shootout.Kurt Myers, 64, was killed by police who had surrounded a block of small businesses in the village of Herkimer since Wednesday afternoon.

Elite police teams went into the building around 8 a.m. local time, trooper Jack Keller said. The shootout occurred in the basement.

Keller said police sent in the dog first and Myers shot and killed it.

‘He was waiting for us’

“He was waiting for us,” Keller said. “He kills the dog. They hear shots fired. Our teams returned fire and the suspect gets shot.”

Hundreds of law enforcement personnel surrounded the building. Police say Myers walked into a barbershop near the town of Mohawk, coolly asked if the man cutting hair remembered him and then opened fire with a shotgun, the first shots in a burst of violence that left four dead and two critically wounded.

John Seymour, one of the men wounded in the attacks told his sister, Mary Hornett, the barbershop attack came out of nowhere.

“He just said that the guys were in the barbershop and this guy comes in and he says, `Hi John, do you remember me?’ and my brother said, `Yes, Kurt, how are you?’ and then he just started shooting,” Hornett said.

Hornett said her brother, who was hospitalized in critical condition, was doing well after being shot in the left hand and right hip.

“My brother couldn’t think of any reason why he would do such a thing,” she said, adding that Myers hadn’t been in the shop for a couple of years.

The shootings shattered the peace of Mohawk and Herkimer, two small villages about 170 miles northwest of New York City, separated by the Mohawk River and the New York State Thruway.

Police said Myers’ rampage started with a fire in his apartment in Mohawk at about 9:30 a.m. Wednesday. He then drove to John’s Barber Shop around the corner and used a shotgun to kill two customers, D’Amico said, identifying them as Harry Montgomery, 68, and Michael Ransear, 57, a retired corrections officer. In addition to Seymour, the shop’s owner, another customer, Dan Haslauer, also was listed in critical condition at a Utica hospital.

The gunman then drove to Gaffy’s Fast Lube in nearby Herkimer and used the shotgun to kill Thomas Stefka, an employee, and Michael Renshaw, a customer who was a 23-year veteran of the state Department of Corrections, D’Amico said.

Police had not had any communication with Myers, whose only known police record was a 1973 drunken-driving arrest, D’Amico said.

Neighbors said they barely knew Myers, who rarely spoke. Traci Randall said the only time she remembers speaking to her next-door neighbor was when he yelled at her son because he thought he had shot an air pellet at his Jeep.

“He was kind of a loner. No wife,” she said.

Michele Mlinar, a bartender at Cangee’s Bar and Grille in Herkimer, said Myers frequently stopped in for a bottle of beer or two, and left without speaking to anyone. She said he was always alone. She hadn’t known his name until police released his mug shot on Wednesday.

DAVIS, CALIF. –  A veterinarian at the University of California, Davis, has some good news about a dog from the Philippines who became an international hero after sacrificing her snout to save two young girls.

Veterinarian Gina Davis tells the San Francisco Chronicle the dog named Kabang appears to have beaten the cancer she was suffering from.

Click here to read more about Kabang.

Kabang, however, is still facing treatment for heartworms in her arteries before she can have the gaping wound on her face closed.

Newspapers in the Philippines have reported that Kabang had her snout and upper jaw sheared off when she jumped in front of a speeding motorcycle, saving her owner’s daughter and niece who were apparently about to be hit.

Kabang ended up in Davis earlier this year after a nurse from Buffalo, N.Y., spearheaded a fundraising campaign to bring her to the U.S.

An idea on school protection..

Man’s Best Friend..

Intelligent, strong and fearless breeds used for military and police work. Obviously highly trainable for protection AND sniffing for various and sundry things such as, drugs, bombs (who knows, this could be the next weapon of choice) and/or in the horrible tragedy in Newtown, CT, bringing down irate or mentally unstable individuals.
A designated school security officer, preferably retired police dog trainer or honorably discharged military personnel that specialized in the training of man’s best friend.
Depending on the size/campus, even two, three or more of. They would have their own area in which to do their “duty” and through socialization of the kiddie and adult kind, well mannered.
IMHO, this type of protection would SEEM more acceptable to all. Of course PETA and the acrimonious LEFT would come up with some excuse(s) to swallow their tongue(s). What’s not to like?..
