VE: Search continues for missing AirAsia plane

AirAsia confirms that it has lost contact with a plane with 162 people on board. Contact was lost at 7.42am local time over the Java Sea.

* Pilot requested route change before contact was lost due to bad weather.

* Flight QZ 8501 took off from Surabaya at 5.20am local time on Sunday and was scheduled to land at Changi Airport at 8.30am.

* Rescue planes and vessels are en route to flight QZ 8501’s last known location.

* Both Indonesian and Malaysian authorities have denied speculation and reports that wreckage from the plane has been found.

    I heard our Foreign Minister Julie Bishop saying that on the news ten minutes ago. She’s even flown with these people.

    Incompetence or malicious intervention? I favour the first, mostly because malicious intervention would create hostages. And the hostage takers would advertise that fact. They’d likely behead a passenger or two for the evening news.
    Still early in the story, though.
